Stormwater Engineering

Construction Projects

Capital Improvement Projects: Approximately 65 percent of stormwater utility revenue supports capital improvements. Major reconstruction projects are planned for many years. The 1996 Stormwater Management Master Plan included a list of 41 projects recommended for flood control. Additional projects are necessary to address structural collapse, erosion, public safety or coordination with other infrastructure projects.

Maintenance Projects: Approximately 25 percent of stormwater utility revenue supports system maintenance. The stormwater maintenance crew keeps the system running by clearing debris, regrading open channels and rebuilding collapsed inlets and pipes. Curb inlet replacement is a primary goal for this crew. There are hundreds of existing curb inlets in need of reconstruction.

Development Projects: As Lawrence continues to grow, so do our storm sewers. Most new storm sewers are constructed by developers building new neighborhoods or businesses, so current development standards emphasize flood protection and adequate storm sewer design. The Public Works Department enforces these standards through the review of plats, site plans and construction plans.
